Dear Friends,
First of all, we would like to say thank you for your interest in our cattle. Some of you may not be familiar with our family, because we have moved. We have left behind a long history of agriculture and cattle ranching in Texas and moved our entire operation to the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.
Our history in agriculture began when our family first came to the United States in the 1700s. The foundation behind the ranch we have today began in 1831. Prior to Texas becoming a Republic, our family was given a land grant from Santa Anna and the Mexican government. This land grant became home for the past eight generations of our family. The ranch was located in Montgomery, Texas, where many in our family still live. Montgomery is a community rich in Texas history and was a wonderful place to grow up, but progress in the area around Houston has made it almost impossible to build and maintain a large ranch.
Cattle have always been an important part of the ranch, but in its early years crops, such as cotton, corn, sugar cane, peas and tobacco, were the main focus. In 1951, my grandfather and father, Reuben Davis Simonton, Jr. and Reuben Davis Simonton IV, decided to make cattle the primary focus of the ranch.
My parents were married in 1965 and two families with cattle backgrounds were joined. My mother, Marilyn Thornberry Simonton, daughter of Owen and Leona Thornberry, also came from a long history of agriculture and cattle. My mother’s family came to Texas in the 1860s and began ranching in the area around Conroe, Texas.
My grandfather, Owen Thornberry, was originally from Combs, Arkansas and was a successful businessman who never forgot his roots. Over the years he came back to Arkansas and brought us all along. The Ozark Mountains were like our second home. My brothers, sister and I spent every summer here, as my mother did as a child. These visits were a great influence on our decision to relocate.
In the early 1970s, my parents began to build a small registered Angus herd along with their commercial herd. Over the years our primary focus became Angus, and now we concentrate our efforts on further growing and improving our herd. We use every tool available to insure our herd will be a part of the future of the Angus breed. We not only concentrate on our present calf crop, but where we will be in twenty years, always looking towards the future and improving the cattle.
Huntsville, Arkansas located in the beautiful Ozark Mountains has become our home and base of operations. We are excited about having a long history in Arkansas, just as we did in Texas. Our goal is to produce well-balanced cattle that are deep bodied, thick, heavy-muscled and easy-keeping, while still focusing on maternal characteristics, soundness, phenotype and carcass traits. We want the cattle to work for you and make your operation as profitable as possible. Please feel free to stop by the ranch any time to view our cattle or give us a call to see what we have available.
We look forward to making many new friends and hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Rebekah Simonton
